Symptoms of TMD

Jaw pain while speaking, eating and yawning

Headaches, earaches, neck & shoulder pain

Clicking & popping sounds from your jaw

Facial swelling

Although they can be associated with other health issues, these symptoms are commonly caused by temporomandibular jaw disorder (TMD). TMD often goes undiagnosed, which causes these symptoms to worsen over time.

Erin Stanojev

Dr. Gray and his entire staff are knowledgeable, professional, caring, and friendly. I have been under their care for over 20 years. About 1.5 years ago I began orthodontic work with them for my jaw issues. It was a procedure I had been avoiding for 6 years until I suffered lockjaw for a week (I couldn’t even drink through a straw). Fast forward to today; I am only halfway through the whole process and it was the best decision! I haven’t experienced jaw pain in over a year and my teeth are looking so good.

Howard White

Dr. Gray clearly explained my situation and options. I chose "the works," jaw alignment, implant, many caps and a partial denture, and now wish that I had invested in this years ago. Dr. Gray and his assistant, Tooba, made the extensive process interesting and humorous, always highly professional and quickly gained my confidence with their expertise. Every effort was made to ensure my comfort towards the final fit and finish.

We finally found the dental practice that we were looking for, thanks also to Emma and the whole team.

Corina Lipani

5 years ago, Dr Gray suggested I start a procedure that would align my jaw, as I was starting to experience some jaw pain and headaches and these would only get worse with time. I did not listen lol. Fast forward 5 years, jaw pain worse especially through the night, and more frequent headaches. In July, I decided it was time to start the process. Easily within a month, my jaw pain and headaches were not just lessening, but pretty much gone. I would highly recommend anyone experiencing this as well, to definitely go ahead with this process. Thank you to Dr Gray and Felicia for taking away my pain, helping me sleep better again, and the care and concern you've shown during my visits. Xoxo

Good News!

There is Relief

The temporomandibular joint connects your lower jaw to your upper. When there is a problem with this joint, it is known as TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder. The excruciating pain that occurs when speaking or eating is due to an inflammation of the joint.

TMD can be caused by a number of conditions such as trauma or injury to the joint, clenching or grinding the teeth, bite misalignments, and arthritis just to name a few. Regardless of the root cause, however, TMD can cause discomfort and at times, severe pain.

Treatment that will change your life

Everyone is unique, from their fingerprints to their bone structure. What most people don’t realize, and what very few dentists and orthodontists are even considering, is that the structure of your jaw plays an enormous part in your oral health as well as your general health.

Dr. Ian Gray is the ONLY dentist in the Greater Toronto Area who diagnoses and treats Jaw Development issues

How jaw development treatment can improve your quality of life:

  • Reduces wear on the jaw joint for improved long-term jaw function, preventing future pain and bite issues

  • Eliminates TMJ related headaches, jaw locking, popping, ear pain, ringing in the ear, and discomfort

  • Improves bite alignment for more even tooth wear, reducing the risk of chipped and cracked teeth

  • Opens up the airway for more restful sleep, reducing or eliminating snoring and other sleep-disrupting symptoms

Invisalign® the clear alternative to traditional braces for treating TMD

Braces are an excellent tool for treating TMD, but you might be turned off by the way traditional braces change your appearance. If you’ve been putting off treatment because you don’t want metal braces to interfere with your smile, then we have some good news. We now offer TMD treatment with Invisalign clear aligners!

Invisalign clear aligners are just as effective as traditional metal braces in treating TMD, only they are virtually invisible because they are made of clear plastic. If you choose Invisalign to treat your TMD symptoms, you can continue to live your life without the visual impact of metal braces, plus some added conveniences.

Invisalign clear aligners are:

  • Fully Removable - so you can eat, drink, brush, and floss every day without having to worry about compromising the hardware

  • Completely clear - so that when you are wearing your aligners, your friends, family, and coworkers will hardly notice them.

  • Very Comfortable - because they are made of plastic that is shaped and molded to fit your teeth perfectly, you will experience little to no irritation.

You don’t have to suffer with TMD pain any more, and you don’t have to worry about what you will look like with braces. Invisalign clear aligners can solve all your problems!

We wanted to share with you the answers to some common questions we get from our patients about jaw development treatment and how it can help with the jaw joint and airway health. Hopefully this will help address questions you might have as well.

IS THERE A BENEFIT TO GETTING MY WORK DONE WITH YOUR OFFICE VS WITH AN ORTHODONTIST?

Orthodontist are great at helping you to attain a nice straight smile. At Dr. Ian Grey Dental Group, our focus is also on your joint health, maximizing your airway, and developing the jaws. The teeth almost naturally align into an esthetic/harmonious position once the joint and airway spaces are respected. This type of jaw development will last a lifetime!

AM I TOO OLD FOR BRACES?

Braces are effective on patients of any age. If you have a jaw joint issue, the joint will get worse with age. A similar analogy is if you have a “bum” knee, and with constant wear and tear, the joint may need to be replaced in your sixties. Of course, in dentistry, we don’t replace the joint. But in the majority of cases, the problem will continue and even get worse. FYI, at least half of patients who receive braces are adults. Of that group, at least half are 50+.

WILL BRACES INTERFERE WITH MY LIFESTYLE?

It has been our experience that if you have a bite or joint issues, eventually they will need to be treated. We recommend handling the situation early when there is less damage and it is not as expensive to treat. Most patients say they wish they had started treatment when it was initially discussed. Plus, if you handle your issues now, you’ll get more years of comfort and health. As a side note, we tend to use ceramic braces a lot which are more esthetic.

Living With the Pain of TMD

Eating - Chewing food is painful with TMD. While friends and family enjoy all types of food, TMD sufferers stick to soft foods or liquid diets.

Talking - Those with TMD may find the simple act of talking painful and avoid social situations all together.

Everyday Life - Simple tasks such as brushing teeth, or involuntary movements like yawning, can trigger unbearable pain for those with TMD.

Working - In extreme cases, TMD can cause blurred vision and dizziness, compromising a TMD sufferer’s ability to function at work or when driving.

A Word from the Doctor

“Seeing a patient relieved of pain, seeing someone smile for the first time in years, treating family members from one generation to the next, and always learning new ways to make everything more comfortable and more accessible is the heart of any dental practice. The personal satisfaction that comes as a result of this type of public service is the greatest contribution and award of all.”
